I started and finished Kacey Herlihy’s Fallen Cowl this week. I really like her designs. They aren’t terribly difficult but they have nice details in them. I’ve knit a cowl pattern of hers and now this lace cowl in a worsted weight, and have several other designs of hers queued up.
I used 275 yards of a worsted-weight yarn from Bare Naked Wools, their Precious base in the colorway Brown Sugar. This was a club yarn, so I’m not sure if they have more of it on the site or not, but I was intrigued to work with it, as it’s a blend of wool, alpaca, yak and rose fibers. I’m not sure I know how rose fibers should feel or knit up, but I will say with assurity this is a luxurious blend. It is soft with a slight halo, and very drapey. It blocked out beautifully with the lace too. A friend saw my IG photos and loved it, so it’ll be heading off to her tomorrow to enjoy in the cooler weather seasons ahead.
This week I’ve also been working on my in-progress Stillness Shawl from Helen Stewart. I finished up the lace section and am just about done the next subtly striped section. I have 2 more rows to knit to put me at the 45% mark on this project per the pattern. Next up will be a textured star-stitch section in the pale gray.
I did order some mini red buttons so I can finish up my current wool applique project. Those should here sometime this week and hopefully I’ll have that finished up for next week’s update.
I think I’m going to try to just focus on the shawl project and not start another new YOP project. I have several other non-YOP things I’m working on, and would like to get some progress made on those as well. So many project, not ever enough time! Have a great week YOP’ers!

Agree, that is a very pretty cowl. Sadly since I no longer winter in the north, I have no need for cowls. But maybe for gifts to northerners?? Your shawl is coming along beautifully. You mean there’s more to life than knitting – say it ain’t so. 🙂
We do get cold weather here but it’s heading off to a friend in Connecticut, and I know she’ll have plenty of cold days to enjoy it!

Wow that cowl is so beautiful! And how fun to knit with Rose fibers, that’s really cool. A few years ago I got a skein with milk fiber in it, and it was so silky and luscious.
Thank you – It was a fun knit. I haven’t knit with milk fiber, but I have liked the soy blends I’ve used (and this rose one too, of course!)
That’s such a beautiful cowl. Is it wrong that I want to smoosh my face in it and see how soft it is? I’ve only knitted with rose fibre in a sample blend of similar fibres but the whole thing was like clouds.
LOL – not wrong at all, but you’ll have to wrestle the recipient for it, I think. I hadn’t used rose fibers before but I think they feel similar to the soy blends. VERY soft!
I love cowls and especially that one! I’m going to look that designer up. I see a cast on in my future! The yarn you used sounds wonderful. Your shawl is really growing and so pretty. I too have many projects and I would like to finish some…..someday! Enjoy your week and keep up the great work!
She has a lot of fun shawls too. I knit her Leftover City cowl too, which is fantastic for using up scraps or minis. Hope you have a great week too!
That’s a pretty cowl! The most unique fiber I’ve worked with so far has been corn fiber, but the rose fiber sounds really neat. (The corn yarn felt odd to work with as I recall, but that could just be my memory of it. It was a while ago now.)
Thank you! I’m honestly not sure I could identify rose versus some other smooth plant-type fiber but it is fun to have different mixes to play from in the world of yarn choices!
I think the best I could do is to (maybe) identify yarns that included some kind of plant-fiber. I doubt I could get more specific than that.
Your cowl looks very pretty. I have a sample of rose fibre and it’s very shiny and silky feeling. Your friend will love wearing it I’m sure. This looks like it’s going to be a large shawl that will be cosy.
