FO Friday – Wild Bees Socks: July 22, 2021

I’m on a roll – two finished objects on two subsequent Fridays! (Although I think this is a short-lived trend as everything else on the needles is a fairly large project now.)

These are my finished Wild Bee Socks (Ravelry link). The design is by Helen Stewart from her Handmade Sock Society 4 collection. I knit the medium size in these and really enjoyed the pattern, despite not finding it particularly easy to keep in my head. The front of the socks has a fun bee-inspired lace pattern; the back of the leg is just plain stockinette, so these knit up more quickly than you might expect. As usual, Helen’s pattern was written perfectly with lots of detail so I just trundled along through the repeats, checking off the rounds, and thoroughly enjoyed the knit. These are knit from the top (cuff) down, and include a heel flap and gusset, and a wide toe.

The yarn is West Yorkshire Spinner’s Signature 4-ply, which is a 75% wool (with about half of that being Blue-Faced Leicester wool) and 25% nylon sock blend yarn. I used under 300 yards to knit my pair. This was a new-to-me yarn and I really fell in love with it. The twist perfectly shows off lace or textured patterns. It is substantial and “woolly” with a nice firm ply so I think it will hold up beautifully for socks. It’s also a great price point at under 15.00 per ball (and a single ball is enough to make a pair of socks). The colorway is Cardamom, which is a vibrant yellowy-green. (My skein was from my Thistle Knitter’s Sock Bag from The Woolly Thistle that I purchased last month, and these socks were knit up in under 2 weeks for their July Sock Sprint KAL.)
